GOP Congressmen alleged that Democrats’ impeachment move against President Donald Trump was an attempt to pull foreign interference in the forthcoming presidential election.
They argued that the agenda behind impeachment is to obstruct Trump’s prospects from winning the election for the second time.
During the impeachment debate, it was also argued that impeachment could not be a political weapon if one is unable to win the presidential election. Democrats have been reluctant on impeaching Trump since he took office in January 2017, Republicans argued.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi early this month declared that Trump has to be impeached to prevent the sanctity of the US elections.
In November, Pelosi reiterated that impeachment was urgent to protect the integrity of the 2020 elections and called ‘let the election decide’ a weak argument by those defending Trump’s alleged influence on the 2016 election result. House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff (D-CA) also asserted that Democrats must impeach Trump so that he does not win the 2020 elections.
Trump, on Wednesday, became the third president in the history of the United States to be impeached after Democrats approved two articles of impeachment i.e. abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.
Barring few Democrats who voted against impeachment, there were two who voted against the abuse of power charge while three voted against obstruction of Congress.
The impeachment enquiry was ordered on September 24 after a whistleblower accused misuse of office by Trump in the Ukraine deal. The Republicans have called the impeachment move a dangerous precedent asserting that it is being politicized.
